Fixed Route

​Fixed route​ is public transportation by bus, metro subway, and light rail. Click here to visit the Maryland Transit Authority website to view Accessible Bus Features.

  • Lift-Equipped Bus Service -​​​
    The ​Maryland Call-A-Lift service provides lift-equipped buses on any route that does not have prescheduled accessible buses.  To arrange a Call-A-Lift ride call MTA-LIFT at 1-866-743-3682 or 410-682-5438 by 4:00pm the day before the planned trip.
  • Maryland Transit Administration Commuter Buses -
    There are more than 50 Central Maryland local bus lines.  Many bus lines connect with Light Rail, Metro Subway and MARC Train service.  Call 866-743-3682 or TTY 410-539-3497.  
  • Metro Subway -The Maryland Metro Subway system runs from Owings Mills through downtown Baltimore to Johns Hopkins Hospital with various stops along the way.  The Metro subway is fully accessible to people with disabilities and Braille station​ guides are installed at all Metro subway station entrances.  
  • ​​Light Rail - Maryland Light Rail trains are accessible to customers with disabilities with boarding ramps.  ​

Mobility and Paratransit

Mobility/Paratransit programs are "origin​ to destination" services for people with disabilities who are not able to ride fixed-route public transportation. If you a​re registered with one area/city's paratransit system you are eligible to use paratransit in all other cities throughout Maryland and the U.S. You must pre-register with each system you wish to use.  Click here for to visit the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) website for more information on Mobility/Paratransit Services.

Need help planning a ride?

  • Customers who are not familiar with the transit system may call for assistance in planning trips. An Information Coordinator can help you with planning a trip including the specific bus or train, transfer requirements, fare amount, and calculate the bus or train arrival time at your stop. They are available Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m.
     
  • The Maryland Transit Authority (MTA) Information Center provides information regarding transit routes, schedules, and fares. The information center telephone number is 1-866-RIDE-MTA (743-3682), 410-539-5000 or TTY at 410-539-3497. Their interactive phone system provides information 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

How can I get modifications made to my vehicle?

Contact the Department of Rehabilitation Services (DORS) office:  You may be eligible for State funding through the Department of Rehabilitation Services (DORS) to assist in making your vehicle modification. MDTAP - AT Financial Loan Program​ - The Assistive Technology Loan Program helps Maryland residents with disabilities and their families qualify for low-interest loans to buy equipment that will help them live, work, and learn more independently.​​

Additional Resources

The Association for Driver Rehabilitation Specialists (ADED) started in 1977. It is a nonprofit group that helps experts who teach people with disabilities how to drive or modify vehicles to fit their needs. As the main organization in this field, ADED shares information, hosts educational conferences, supports research, and encourages new equipment design.
